The Program
The SIR Program exists to control codling moth
populations. It is targeted at orchard and urban
property owners with apple, pear or crabapple trees, or
quince trees or shrubs. All or portions of four regional
districts are within the service area and participate in the Program,
including:
-
Regional District of the Okanagan Similkameen
(RDOS)
-
Regional District of the Central Okanagan (RDCO)
-
Regional District of the North Okanagan (RDNO)
-
Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD)
The Program is focused on the rearing and
release of sterile codling moths. In its entirety,
however, the Program features a variety of
services, including monitoring,
education, and enforcement. The Program also promotes
the strategic use of a combination of codling moth
controls, including sterile moth release, removal of
blossoms and fruit, cardboard banding, intensive
monitoring, and the judicious application of pesticides.
